Josephine Tey, pen name of Elizabeth MacKintosh, wrote a series of mysteries that are notable for how dissimilar they are. The Daughter of Time is probably her best known book. I had read all of the other Tey mysteries but this one, and I'm glad that I finally tracked it down.

As expected, Tey provides an unexpected story. [Potential spoiler alert (although I don't think it is!)] I hope it won't be considered a spoiler to note that the murder in this murder mystery only occurs near the end of the book. Despite that fact, I found the book to be very well written and it held my interest all the way.

A couple of minor points: Although set in postwar Britain, the book lacks the downbeat rationing, decay, end-of-Empire gloom that mars some books written during this period. The other related point is that the type of college -- a sort of gymnastics/health school -- doesn't seem to exist in the United States. But unfamiliarity with this type of college didn't interfere with my enjoyment of the book.

Finally, much as I liked the book, I'm not at all sure that I understood the ending! If anyone who happens to read this review could explain it to me as a comment, I would much appreciate it.

You will be waiting quite some time if you expect this to be a traditional cosy, i.e. one or two murders in the first half and then red herrings and suspects peppered through the rest of the novel. Some reviewers called this dull, perhaps because it is not the classic cosy-by-numbers. It is more of a meditation on motivations and an individual's misconceptions explored through the events and misadventures related on the page. Will Miss Pym be quite so self-assured and ready to judge after the twist rigt at the very end?
I enjoyed reading a book by a woman with a female heroine and starring the women classmates and girls school and the era in which it was written was also intriguing . It moved a little slowly in the first half so had it not been my book club selection I might have let it go but then it picked up and I kept thinking something was "going." To happen and finally it did....so late in the book, but it certainly brought up lots on interesting comments and theories in my book club.
This is not your traditional murder mystery by any stretch of the imagination. The "accident" doesn't take place until almost the end of the book. This book really defies classification. It reads more like a comedy of manners than a mystery. What it is, is an enjoyable read that I would recommend to anyone who wishes to disappear for a little while to a time and place where being rude was the most offensive crime of all.
Not your usual 'detective' story. Hooked me and just when I thought it was 'solved,' surprise!'. A nice, easy, fun read.
A very enjoyable book, unsullied by modern agendas and political correctness. (A great contrast to the book I read just previous to this one.) it read more like a novel, telling the stories of various characters. The mystery really only fully played out at the very end with a remarkable twist!
Decidedly offbeat. Though published in 1948, events transpire in a seemingly timeless world--no mention of war or the troubled peace that followed. I can't say that I especially cared about the characters or even enjoyed the story. And yet, as always, Tey's writing is so incisive and compelling I kept reading until the final line--with no regrets.
I think this is one of my favorite Josephine Tey novels. The mystery isn't all that mysterious--I figured it out before Miss Pym did--but the characters and the setting were wonderful. Tey does an excellent job of evoking life in a women's college--the range of personalities, the kind of friendships that develop, the bond between staff and students. I also really liked Miss Pym as a central character; I'd grown a bit tired of Inspector Grant after several of Tey's earlier novels, and this clever woman protagonist engaged me as a reader. I wish Tey had written more novels with Miss Pym. Overall, this was a thoroughly enjoyable read.
