They were able to transform the world in a matter of years. They molded it to their will and created a new world order. It happened so fast no one had a chance to stop it. The ones who cared could only stand by and watch as all traces of the old world began to disappear piece by piece.
They are the Council and they will stop at nothing to fulfill their plan, even if that means murder.
Now the only man left of that previous world is Harley Jacobs and when he receives a letter from the Council telling him to vacate his home he must make a decision that will change his life forever. Does he protect his family and leave or does he stay and make one last stand against the people that took everything away from him?
The first part in a multi-book series, The Midnight Stand introduces us to a harrowing view of a not too distant future that raises the question of what it truly means to be an individual.
The Midnight Stand The Elysia Saga Book 1 eBook Louis A Affortunato
The Midnight Stand (The Elysia Saga Book 1) by Louis A. Affortunado starts out with the protagonist, Harley Jacobs sipping a scotch, most likely his last one, while holding a shotgun. A notice of eviction sits on the table next to him but this is no ordinary eviction notice, it’s from “The Council” – the group who systematically took over and changed the world from one of possessions where legacies could be passed along to that of a more “sophisticated and user friendly” automated way. Harley inherited his home from his grandfather (who built it by hand) when he was eight and wanted to pass it along to his son, Jasper. This would be illegal. His eviction will take place with him in or not in the home and like it or not if he non-complies he and his family will be severely punished. He and his wife, Sara, tried long and hard to have their one son and after many third-trimester cancelled pregnancies finally had Jasper. They had seven cancelled before finally going full term. The love of his past and the love for his son empowered him to want to go against The Council, to go where no one has succeeded before to hold onto the legacy he wants to pass on to Jasper. And so this story begins with such intensity I found it hard to put the book down. The story continues and weaves back and forth in time, earlier to Harley’s relationship with his down-to-earth grandfather, then to the present to the committee member assigned to remove him who has his own set of problems, and continues on to Harley’s determination come hell or high water to stay the course and not lose his past (the past he learned and inherited from his grandfather and wants to pass along to his son). The characters are well developed and the storyline tension/conflict strongly set to move the story along at a fast engaging pace that kept me at it until I shut the last page. Not to reveal or spoil the rest of the story line, suffice it to say this was a well-written, evenly paced, balanced story with a strong theme of (technical advancement versus humanity and the consequences of each) that didn’t let up till the epilogue. Looking forward to the next one in the series from the talented Louis A. Affortunado.Product details

The Midnight Stand The Elysia Saga Book 1 eBook Louis A Affortunato Reviews
This novel is not just another dystopian future…there are interesting twists and turns, and plot surprises to get you going. It’s a page-turner that hooks you from page one! Harley the main character has grown up in a back to the land environment and still lives in the house that his Grandfather built. The theme of technology running out of control leading to fascist future has come to us in many guises from Fahrenheit 411 to Orwell’s 1984, yet this book has some interesting new twists with forced evictions, and loss of individuality and individual rights and freedom. Author Louis Affortunato has written an intensely original story. Is the machine world an ‘improvement’? Harley with his glass of scotch in one hand and his shotgun in the other, is waiting for the ‘Wrecking Crew’ and a ‘Midnight Eviction’. For fans of Dystopian future novels this one is a MUST READ!!! Harley has some surprises in store for Maxon Wheeler and his Wrecking crew! Great plotting and character development! (Review by Howard Lipman, pen name PanOrpheus, author of the ‘Delphic Oracles’ ‘Songs and Stories’ (from Tesla’s Tower…etc.) and Mage and Source Sci-Fi-Steampunk alternate History Fantasy series.)
I enjoy reading dystopian novels as I find it's so interesting to speculate on the various ways that our civilization can self-destruct and then try to survive in the aftermath. Author Louis Anthony has written a very original story with his "The Midnight Stand" and I found it to be both original and quite intense. The story of a world in the not too distant future that is supposed to be evolved and much improved, yet there are a lot of rules and oversight by "the Council". One man, Harely, doesn't like this and this first book is the story of what happens when the new establishment shows up to take away his home and his individuality once and for all. A great read that sets up what promises to be a pretty intriguing series.
